Management of
the animal collection

The 21st century zoos are involved and support wildlife research, including species that are part of their collection, as well as wild species.
As such, the Rabat Zoo supports research on wildlife in Morocco. It hosts 22 endangered species in Morocco, 8 species subject to a reintroduction program, among which 5 species are extinct in the Moroccan wilderness.

The Atlas lion

The Atlas lion or the Barbary lion (Panthera leo leo) is a specie that has disappeared from the wild. Rabat Zoo has been preserving a population of about 38 lions for several years.

Antelopes of the Moroccan desert

Rabat Zoo, is directly involved in the breeding of sahelo saharan antelopes and provides technical supervision of all translocation operations and the reintroduction of these species in collaboration with the High Commission for Water and Forests and the Fight Against the Desertification. The status of highly endangered species such as Addax (Addax nasomaculatus), Oryx (Oryxdammah), Gazelle Dama (Gazella dama), Gazelle Dorcas (Gazella dorcas) and Gazelle Cuvier's (Gazella cuvieri), place the breeding programs of these species among the most important efforts undertaken by Rabat Zoo.

Waldrapp or the Bald Ibis

Morocco is home to the last viable colony of Bald Ibis. In collaboration with specialized international institutions, the Rabat Zoo develops a reproduction and conservation plan of a large population of this rare species.
